Herding Instinct

Birds of a feather flock together.  Have you heard that saying?

There’s a certain phenomenon in life and business: Shiny objects attract attention.  And, attention attracts attention.

  • Someone spots a celebrity at Disneyland.  And soon, there’s a swarm of people snapping pictures of the celeb.
  • Bitcoin starts taking off.  And, all of a sudden everyone becomes a bitcoin investor.
  • In the 70s, Pet Rocks and Cabbage Patch Kids became all the rage.

I’m sure you can probably think of certain crazes or fads you’ve ...

Innovate, Accelerate, Replicate ®

Innovate, Accelerate, Replicate ® are the three basic business building blocks.  How’s that for alliteration?

And, it’s so fundamental, we even thought to trademark it.

You could be an entrepreneur starting a business.  Or, you could be leading a Fortune 500 Company.  Whatever the case, you will need to be mindful of this trio.

God First: Then, Gross Margin

Margin is important, but, alas, God first: Then, gross margin.

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.” – Psalm 127:1

If you are planning to start or grow your organization, it’s important to have first things first.

I have been blessed with decades of business experience.  And, I have advised numerous individuals and organizations.  And, given all of that, I’ve discovered the keys to success:

  1. God first.
  2. Have adequate margin ...

Setting Goals

This isn’t an article about why you should be setting goals.  But, rather how to set goals.

As the saying goes, “A dream or a goal without a plan is only a wish.”

Typical Goals

Here are some typical goals for a business or organization:

  • Start a business, and grow it until it reaches $100 million in revenue in 5 years.
  • Become the industry’s leading provider of X.
  • Achieve EBITDA equal to 20% of gross.
  • Do an IPO sometime in the next 3 years.

And, you better get yours.  Otherwise, you and your organization might be like some of the few people who didn’t own a “pet rock” in the 70s.

One Call Close

Have you heard that phrase before?  Anyone who has spent time in or around professional sales might identify with that phrase.

It’s the sales person’s equivalent of a proverbial “hole in one” in golf.  It’s as rare as hitting a golf ball off of a tee that goes straight into the hole – as it is for a salesperson to close a deal with a prospect in the first meeting.

Sales is Not a Full Contact Sport

In some sales courses, ...

Completeness

It is an audit objective.

As a former auditor for what’s now PricewaterhouseCoopers, we dealt with audit objectives.  These audit objectives were also learned in my Accounting/Auditing classes in business college at California State University, Fullerton.

The audit objectives were also reinforced in the CPA review course.  That is, a CPA examination test preparation course I took from Newt Becker my senior year.

Let’s see if I remember … ECVARP was the acronym Newt used.  Existence, Completeness, Valuation, Accuracy/Validity, Rights/Obligations, Presentation/Disclosure.  But this ...
