The Golden Rule

The Golden Rule

You’ve probably heard someone mention the golden rule.  Do you know it?

“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.” – Matthew 7:12

It’s as simple as that.  But, as we say, simple isn’t always necessarily easy.

So, how do we apply this simple, yet powerful rule in our everyday lives?

At Blue Elevator™, we would call “The Golden Rule” a Principle.  And, as we advise our clients, it’s often helpful to think of concepts in three parts: Principle.  Application.  Technique.  You can read our article here: Introducing PAT.

Applying The Golden Rule

So, how do we apply the Golden Rule?

Well, guess what?  The Bible, God’s Word, gives us the application.

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:3-4

And, there you have it:

  1. Do nothing out of selfish ambition.
  2. Value others above yourself.
  3. Look out for the interests of others.

The Technique Of Applying The Golden Rule

Lastly, as we look to carry out or apply the Golden Rule, we can, again, look to God’s Word.

“Do everything in love.” – 1 Corinthians 16:14

And, there you have it.

Summary

So, you should treat others the way you want to be treated.

And, to do this, you should …

  1. Do nothing out of selfish ambition.
  2. Value others above yourself.
  3. Look out for the interests of others.

And, do it ALL in love!

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails.” – 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

Go and do likewise.  It will suit you well!
